About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Define the accuracy and operational requirements for the torque estimation algorithm
  • Build and verify a torsional vibration model of the powertrain using Wärtsilä data, with a final test environment in Simulink
  • Develop convex optimization-based and/or physics-informed deep learning approaches to torque estimation
  • Study the torque estimation framework using simulated measurements and scenarios
  • Verify the framework against measurements from Wärtsilä's physical powertrain
  • Test and refine the torque estimation model for implementation in an embedded environment with limited computing capacity
  • Integrate the estimation method into the embedded engine control system
  • Conduct work physically at Aalto University campus and Wärtsilä Vaasa STH laboratory

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Master's or Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, or other relevant field
  • Excellent written and oral skills in English
  • Applicants must be able to work full-time
  • For doctoral studies, meet the official eligibility requirements of the Aalto Doctoral Programme in Engineering during a trial period of 6 months
  • Background in mechanical engineering, control engineering, applied mathematics, electrical engineering, or a related field (asset, not a strict requirement)
  • Knowledge of torsional vibration, rotordynamics, or powertrain/drivetrain dynamics (asset, not a strict requirement)
  • Experience with state estimation or optimization methods, such as Kalman filtering or convex optimization (asset, not a strict requirement)
  • Interest or experience in machine learning, particularly physics-informed or physics-constrained learning (asset, not a strict requirement)
  • Programming and modelling skills in Matlab/Simulink, Python, C, or other embedded-systems languages (asset, not a strict requirement)
  • Interest in embedded systems and control engineering, and in working with industrial measurement data (asset, not a strict requirement)
  • Finnish language skills are considered a benefit
