About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Set the technical vision for building, securing, and scaling Abacus’s healthcare data and data applications platforms
Translate business and customer needs into target-state architectures across data, applications, cloud, and agent-assisted engineering
Create reusable application foundations, including application blueprints, integration contracts, and production-readiness gates
Own or contribute to reference architecture for data ingestion, transformation, distribution, and serving
Define architecture standards for scalability, high availability/disaster recovery, serverless patterns, and multi-tenant SaaS across AWS and Azure
Design for HITRUST and GovRamp compliance in partnership with Security and Compliance
Design scalable architectures for healthcare data solutions and analytical and operational serving layers
Apply FHIR-based interoperability patterns and healthcare data standards
Establish data contracts, lineage, quality controls, metadata, and integration patterns
Define reusable user-management, tenant, role, permission, and administration patterns
Partner with UX/Design on front-end and design-system standards
Convert architecture standards into skills, rules, templates, and evaluation rubrics for agent-assisted development
Evaluate agent-generated code and designs and help build quality scoring and review mechanisms
Partner with AI Engineering on semantic/context layers, MCP and A2A agent interfaces, retrieval patterns, AI gateways, evaluation, traceability, and governed model access
Contribute to Architecture and Data Guilds, hackathons, architecture reviews, pairing, pilots, and knowledge sharing
Mentor engineers and Solution Architects as the role grows
Establish lightweight architecture review mechanisms and measure adoption through reuse, exception volume, and escaped design defects
Ensure architecture packages include deployment topology, support model, rollback strategy, and operational telemetry
Partner with DevOps/Platform and Security on CI/CD, infrastructure as code, observability, and DORA metrics
Deliver reference architectures, API/data contracts, starter implementations, architecture decision records, non-functional requirements, and operational-readiness checklists

Requirements

What you’ll need

Software engineering experience, typically 8+ years, including significant architecture experience designing and guiding complex cloud, data, integration, and application solutions from discovery through production operation
Full-stack engineering background across services and APIs, data, and cloud infrastructure
Ability to establish architecture standards and drive team adoption
Deep hands-on experience with AWS and/or Azure
Experience with containers and orchestration such as Kubernetes/K8s, Amazon EKS, Azure AKS, Google GKE, OpenShift, or comparable
Git-based CI/CD
Infrastructure as Code
Observability and secure production operations
Experience with modern data platforms and distributed data processing, such as Databricks and Spark or Snowflake
Experience with modern application and service architectures, API-first services, Python exposure, identity and authorization, and multi-tenant SaaS patterns
Working knowledge of agentic and AI-enabled engineering, including LLM-enabled applications, MCP/A2A, LangGraph or comparable orchestration, AI-assisted developer tools such as Cursor, Agent Driven Development and Harnesses, retrieval/context patterns, evaluation, and responsible AI controls
Excellent communication skills and ability to align senior business and technical stakeholders and produce clear architecture artifacts
Direct experience building or maintaining reference architectures or developer platforms used by multiple teams
Experience defining architecture standards, rules, or evaluation rubrics for AI- or agent-assisted development workflows
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
