About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design and build backend services, APIs using GraphQL and REST, and data layers with Java and Spring Boot
  • Develop features end-to-end through the React/TypeScript frontend
  • Build integrations with systems used by pharmaceutical customers
  • Extend the platform for customer-specific needs
  • Develop AI features, including AI assistant integrations and LLM-powered capabilities
  • Use AI tools to accelerate scaffolding, refactoring and test writing while maintaining architecture, security and quality
  • Direct AI agents and own the quality of shipped code
  • Contribute hands-on to modular architecture using Spring Modulith, platform modules and feature modules
  • Optimize PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch queries
  • Work with RDF semantic data structures
  • Maintain test coverage using JUnit, Testcontainers and Playwright
  • Conduct merge request reviews, including reviews of AI-generated code
  • Collaborate with backend and frontend engineers, QA, DevOps and product owners
  • Work autonomously with direct access to the CTO as mentor and technical sparring partner

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 3+ years building backend services in production
  • Solid knowledge of modern Java (21+)
  • Solid knowledge of Spring Boot, including Spring Security and Spring Data JPA
  • PostgreSQL experience with Flyway
  • API design experience with REST and GraphQL
  • Computer Science degree, Fachinformatiker training, or strong hands-on experience as a career changer welcomed
  • Eye for good UI principles and willingness to own the frontend part of a feature
  • Experience with React and TypeScript is a plus
  • Architectural thinking involving modules, boundaries and trade-offs
  • Daily use of AI tools such as Cursor, Claude or Gemini
  • Experience with unit, integration and E2E testing
  • GitLab CI/CD experience
  • Based in Germany within reasonable commuting distance to the Cologne office
  • Valid German work permit
  • Business-fluent English required
  • German skills are a strong plus
  • On-site presence in Cologne/NRW required
  • Bonus: DevOps experience with Docker, Kubernetes or AWS; semantic web experience with RDF, SPARQL or Apache Jena; Elasticsearch; LLM or MCP integration; Material UI; pharma/life-sciences domains such as FHIR or IDMP
