About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Conduct legal and factual research for current and prospective litigation
  • Draft research memoranda
  • Potentially draft litigation documents, including discovery requests, affidavits, and motions
  • Research and draft materials for legislative advocacy and public education
  • Complete research and writing projects supporting litigation, policy advocacy, and public education
  • Receive assignments from attorneys across the LGBTQ & HIV Project
  • Work under close supervision from the primary intern supervisor and assigning attorneys
  • Contribute creative insights and substantive work while developing as a future civil rights advocate

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Currently matriculated law student
  • Must have completed at least one year of law school by the start of the internship
  • Must be based in the U.S. for the entire duration of the internship
  • Lawfully authorized to work to receive the stipend
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing and protecting the civil liberties of LGBTQ+ people and people living with HIV
  • Excellent internet and legal database research skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail, organization, and time-management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Initiative to see projects through to completion
  • Commitment to the ACLU mission
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, belonging, diversity, collaborative work, and respectful conflict resolution

Comp & perks
  • Stipend of $24/hour for legal interns, taxed
  • Partial stipend available for students receiving outside funding, bringing total funding up to the ACLU’s stipend amount
