About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Own the device software system end to end, defining architecture, breaking it into well-scoped workstreams, and driving fast, iterative delivery.
  • Write production code and delegate tasks to a team of three firmware engineers.
  • Report to the Director of Electrical Engineering.
  • Develop the IslandDER digital interface for secure integration with home batteries and Vehicle-to-Home solutions.
  • Monitor voltage and current, drive relays, perform safety checks, and communicate securely with third-party devices and the ConnectDER cloud.
  • Own Data Acquisition, Control, Communication, and Integration subsystems.
  • Design safety-critical software, safety case, FMEA, and NRTL certification.
  • Design and implement revenue-grade metering, including data acquisition, signal processing, and calibration.
  • Partner with electrical engineering on requirements, board bring-up, cross-boundary debugging, hardware testability, and safety.
  • Own secure firmware updates, including secure boot, code signing, and key management.
  • Maintain modern CI/CD and testable code, taking systems from prototype to mass production.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science, with 7+ years in firmware engineering and a track record of shipping new products at scale.
  • Rigorous system design and documentation, including clear technical documentation and design diagrams.
  • Experience driving complex safety certification, such as IEC 61508, IEC 60730, or UL 1998, to completion.
  • Technical leadership experience directing project technical strategy, partitioning workstreams, and shipping code.
  • Expert proficiency in C, C++, and/or Rust.
  • Deep experience debugging embedded systems with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG/SWD.
  • Deep bare-metal/RTOS firmware experience on modern 32-bit microcontrollers, including low-level architecture and multi-core memory optimization.
  • Experience with ARM Cortex-M or similar architectures.
  • Sophisticated use of AI coding agents with ownership of shipped decisions.
  • Ability to iterate quickly, size effort to business value, and explain complex requirements to diverse stakeholders.
  • Must submit a resume.
  • Selected candidates must pass a criminal history background screening and reference check.
  • Must be able to show proof of work authorization.
  • Preferred: Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.
  • Preferred: Experience taking safety-critical software through NRTL certification.
  • Preferred: Matter/Thread device commissioning, including SPAKE2+/PASE and setup-code or QR pairing.
  • Preferred: I2C, UART, SPI, CAN/CAN-FD, Ethernet, Make, CMake, test automation, and CI/CD.
  • Preferred: Embedded TCP/IP networking, lwIP, WireGuard or similar secure tunnels on embedded platforms.
  • Preferred: Reverse-engineering CAN protocols or developing custom evaluation tools.
  • Preferred: RTOS configuration and use for multi-threaded, timing-critical applications; PX5 or ThreadX experience.
  • Preferred: Code-signing/PKI systems for firmware, secure boot verification, key rotation, and revocation.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with UL 1741/IEEE 1547, UL 3141, UL 2900, and ANSI C12.1.
