Science and Technology Lead – Living Architecture
Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA). Act as the technical lead with the Programme Director and Programme Specialist to shape and deliver a research programme aimed at growing buildings .
About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Act as the technical lead with the Programme Director and Programme Specialist to shape and deliver a research programme aimed at growing buildings
- Review project proposals and grant applications, assess technical milestones, and monitor Creator teams’ work
- Lead and contribute to technical discussions, project meetings, workshops, and formal reviews
- Provide evidence-based technical insight to support decisions and strategic direction
- Communicate complex scientific ideas to government, funders, and ecosystem stakeholders
- Identify emerging trends and promising technologies, people, and ideas
- Co-author white papers, open calls, and technical reviews
- Track project delivery against technical milestones and benchmark progress against the state of the art
- Identify opportunities for research cross-pollination and maintain continuity across the opportunity space
- Represent the programme at events, workshops, and talks
- Develop relationships with researchers, labs, and founders
- Work with Activation Partners to connect Creator teams with tools, platforms, and networks
- Collaborate on funding models, budgets, tooling, and operational mechanisms
- Share best practices across ARIA’s Science and Technology Leads and help build ARIA’s scientific and operational culture
Requirements
What you’ll need- First-hand exposure to developing living architecture: growing/retrofitting buildings and/or growing building materials using biology
- Strong understanding of, and relevant expertise in, engineering
- Ability to grasp and navigate diverse technical projects
- Skill in identifying technical bottlenecks, risk analysis and resolution, tracking technical milestones, and reporting on complex technical projects
- Ability to translate complex technical concepts and timelines to diverse stakeholders
- Willingness to ask questions and rapidly learn and adapt to new scientific areas
- Ability to uncover non-obvious opportunities and risks, connecting teams, ideas, and research threads
- Adaptability in uncertain and fast-paced environments
- Ability to comprehend and articulate complex concepts clearly and interrogate ideas effectively
- Cross-disciplinary expertise in areas including engineering, architecture, biology, materials science, social science and design (desirable)
- Experience taking a product to market, especially related to living architecture or grown materials (desirable)
- Experience performing technical assignments requiring unconventional or novel approaches (desirable)
- Strong working knowledge of the UK R&D ecosystem (desirable)
- Understanding of UK regulatory frameworks for developing and marketing living building materials (desirable)
- Scientific qualification; PhD or deeper technical experience preferred in engineering, biodesign, biology, or similar
- Willingness and ability to travel to different locations around the UK and internationally as necessary
