Key responsibilities & impact

Set technical strategy for the team on a year-long time scale
Connect technical strategy to critical, business-impacting projects
Collaborate with product management, design and analytics throughout the product development lifecycle
Ensure technical sustainability, risks and trade-offs are understood and managed
Define and advocate for technical solutions and operational processes
Own team operations and availability, including monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing and alerting
Foster quality and ownership through code review and design standards
Advocate for engineering standards through writing and tech talks
Develop team talent through feedback, guidance and leading by example
Build full-stack cardholder experiences and backend services for Affirm’s card product
Own features end to end, from problem definition through production launch and monitoring
Use AI to improve development quality and customer experiences

Requirements

What you’ll need

8+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using languages such as Python or Kotlin
Extensive experience developing highly available distributed systems
Experience with AWS, MySQL, Spark and Kubernetes
8+ years of experience as a software engineer
Proficiency developing web apps with declarative UI frameworks such as React Native, React or Vue
Proficiency designing, developing and launching systems at scale
Experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecating existing functionality through technical and execution plans
Ability to write high-quality, understandable code
Ability to work from low-level language idioms through large-system architecture
AI-first mindset and adoption of current technologies
Demonstrated ability to gather and iterate on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field
