About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Build and scale backend systems supporting user identity and privacy
- Design and build backend services and APIs enforcing identity and privacy rules across product surfaces
- Contribute to large-scale migrations from legacy identity patterns
- Build tooling that makes migrations safe to run broadly
- Define and evolve authorization logic for context-scoped data access
- Partner with teams building messaging, trips, profile, and related systems
- Participate in design and code reviews
- Debug and resolve production issues through structured root-cause analysis
Requirements
What you’ll need- 6+ years of professional backend software engineering experience
- Strong fundamentals in service-oriented architecture, API design, and data modeling
- Proficiency in Java and/or Kotlin
- Comfort working within a microservices environment, including RPC frameworks, service IDLs, and dependency injection
- Experience designing systems with correctness and authorization as first-class concerns
- Track record of shipping migrations or infrastructure changes used by other teams
- Attention to backward compatibility and rollout safety
- Strong written communication
- Ability to document problems, root causes, and solution trade-offs clearly
- Comfort turning complex, evolving privacy or identity requirements into concrete technical designs
- Must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity
