About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Work at sea aboard commercial fishing vessels collecting and recording data and biological samples for NMFS Northeast Fisheries Science Center
- Record detailed information on vessel gear and fishing activity
- Collect data on fish catch, discards, and incidental takes involving marine mammals, seabirds, and marine turtles
- Operate on vessels ranging from 20 to 100 feet during trips of approximately 1 to 14 days
- Assess trawl, gillnet, longline, and handline gear types
- Collect data related to fishing programs, economics, catch, and fishing efficiency
- Support quantitative biological, vessel, and gear-selectivity information collection for New England and Mid-Atlantic fisheries
- Attend and complete 3-week in-person training in Falmouth, Massachusetts
- Work on deck and perform sampling and biological identification activities
- Deploy from ports throughout New England and Mid-Atlantic states
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma is required
- Experience with data entry on computers
- Must be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S.
- Must be physically able, as determined by a licensed physician’s certification, to perform observer duties
- Own transportation is required
- Commitment to the program for at least one year
- Must be able to handle heavy lifting, odd hours, long days, and rough seas
- Must be mentally prepared to be away from home for multiple days
- Currently living or willing to live within 50 miles of Seabrook, NH
- Bachelor's degree in biology or related field with 30 biology credits and 6 marine science credits preferred
- Undergraduate math or statistics course preferred
- At-sea experience preferred
- Coursework in Dichotomous Keys preferred
- Experience collecting field data and entering databases preferred
- Resume, cover letter, 3 to 5 academic/professional references, and unofficial transcripts required for application
