About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Collect and record data and biological samples at sea for NMFS Northeast Fisheries Science Center
  • Work aboard commercial fishing vessels operating from ports throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic
  • Record detailed information on vessel gear and fishing activity
  • Collect data on fish catch, discard, and incidental takes including marine mammals, seabirds, and marine turtles
  • Work on vessels ranging from 20 to 100 feet during trips of approximately 1 to 14 days
  • Assess trawl, gillnet, longline, and handline gear types
  • Collect data on fishing programs, economics, catch data, and fishing efficiency
  • Document stock information to support environmental protection and fishery sustainability
  • Follow sampling protocols and identify fish, marine mammals, and sea turtles
  • Work on deck and perform duties during odd hours and long days in rough seas

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High school diploma is required
  • Experience with data entry on computers
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Must be physically able, as determined by a licensed physician’s certification, to perform observer duties
  • Own transportation is required
  • Commitment to the program for at least one year
  • Must be currently living or willing to live within 50 miles of Kennebunkport, ME
  • Must be mentally prepared to be away from home for multiple days
  • Must be physically able to handle heavy lifting, odd hours, long days, and rough seas
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field with 30 credits of biology coursework and 6 credits of marine science preferred
  • At least one undergraduate course in math or statistics preferred
  • At-sea experience preferred
  • Coursework in Dichotomous Keys preferred
  • Experience collecting field data and entering databases preferred
  • Resume, cover letter detailing sea and fish experience, 3 to 5 academic/professional references, and unofficial transcripts required for application consideration
