About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Review clinical documentation and accurately assess and enter charges for Emergency, Outpatient, and Observation services
  • Use medical software to capture all billable charges
  • Identify inconsistencies in medical reports and work with leadership and operations staff to improve charge capture and correct errors
  • Review, calculate, and enter charges in the electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Examine financial reports for accuracy and edits
  • Process and complete charge entry
  • Monitor and audit charts
  • Ensure charges comply with federal regulations
  • Partner with coding, finance, providers, and site leadership on provider productivity and dummy code audits
  • Identify missing notes and charges and work with providers to complete them
  • Identify, analyze, and edit charge capture errors, double charging, errors, and omissions
  • Reconcile inpatient and outpatient hospital professional fees to identify missing charges and/or notes
  • Manage 3050WQ, Charge Review, Claim Edit, Account, and Follow Up WQs
  • Verify insurance eligibility and document information in Epic
  • Resolve patient/client problems, direct calls, adjust accounts, and update demographic and insurance information
  • Register patients as needed for billing for places of service outside of Allina
  • Follow up on billing and quality-of-care issues and refer complaints appropriately
  • Obtain referrals and prior authorizations for denied encounters
  • Resolve complex accounts requiring expertise and critical thinking
  • Identify workflow problems and work with providers and site leadership on education opportunities
  • Inform manager about documentation deficits affecting revenue efficiency and accuracy
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Must be 18 years of age with education and/or experience needed to meet required functional competencies
  • 2 to 5 years of experience working in health care insurance, billing, and charging
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Associate's or Vocational degree in business, healthcare, or related field preferred
  • 2 to 5 years of medical terminology experience preferred
  • Certified Coding Specialist - American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) preferred upon hire
  • Sedentary physical demands; lifting up to 10 lbs. occasionally and negligible weight frequently
