About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead and contribute to project teams developing process-system designs for automotive and aerospace research and test facilities
- Own technical schedule and budget performance for assigned work
- Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate engineering work under senior-engineer direction
- Analyze work and apply engineering principles and practices
- Review assigned results for completeness, correctness, and documentation
- Develop technical reports and presentations for project management and clients
- Formally check others’ work
- Collaborate with structural, machine design, controls and instrumentation, and aerodynamics/fluid dynamics engineers
- Size and specify piping, ducting, compressors, pumps, fans, valves, flow measurement, and fluid-conditioning equipment
- Design high-pressure cryogenic and pneumatic piping, high-temperature and steam systems, refrigeration, vacuum and fuel systems, and specialty HVAC systems
- Support project managers and senior engineers in ongoing design efforts
- Participate in internal and external meetings and design reviews
- Gather information, interview stakeholders, perform studies and calculations, and prepare layouts and sketches
- Support and supervise installation activities with suppliers, subcontractors, and trades
- Create engineering calculations and specifications and oversee engineering drawings
- Travel for design reviews, factory acceptance testing, construction support, and startup/commissioning
- Participate in proposal development and marketing activities
- Perform field work around machinery and on test stands
- Work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team to meet budgets and schedules
Requirements
What you’ll need- B.S. Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from an accredited engineering school
- Minimum 5 years engineering experience, or 2–3 years engineering experience and a master’s degree from an accredited engineering school
- Prior design experience with process systems is preferred
- Self-motivated with ability to work collaboratively and independently
- Ability to work in a multi-discipline team environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Knowledge and experience with common process piping systems
- Strong mechanical and process engineering analytical skills
- Excellent oral and written communication, technical problem-solving, and organizational skills
- US citizenship required due to federal requirements
- Experience managing scope, schedule, and budget of individual projects
- Design experience including process drawing layouts and specifications
- Knowledge of ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, and ASME B&PV Code
- Knowledge of thermodynamics, compressible and incompressible fluid flow, thermal sciences, and process systems
- Software experience preferred: AutoCAD, AutoPipe, Caesar II, Mathcad, Creo, and AFT
- FE/EIT certification preferred
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs
- Regular day-shift attendance is mandatory
- Ability to work in office, with occasional field work, travel, site visits, and construction/project-site access
