About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Build and maintain ACLS press lists, draft pitches, and support media coverage efforts
- Track and log ACLS media coverage and mentions
- Cultivate relationships with journalists and media outlets
- Develop, execute, and refine earned media strategies across higher education, philanthropy, news, policy, culture, and other relevant outlets
- Collaborate with program and fundraising teams on earned media strategies
- Write, distribute, and manage responses to press releases and targeted pitches through PRNewswire
- Monitor editorial calendars for key media targets
- Develop op-eds, talking points, briefing documents, and background research
- Track and report community engagement metrics for earned media
- Identify and write stories about ACLS community members and impact using video, photography, and written formats
- Coordinate video shoots with external vendors and develop promotional content
- Conduct constituent interviews and create social media cuts
- Capture event photography as needed
- Write social media content and help implement strategies for Facebook, BlueSky, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn
- Oversee monthly community newsletter content and ACLS announcements
- Present select projects to staff and leadership
- Manage external communications distribution through Mailchimp, social media, and WordPress
- Document processes and policies for Cision, media outreach, and content development
- Provide general administrative support and other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- 3+ years experience in media relations communications, content marketing, editorial, or journalism, ideally in a mission-driven or higher education context
- Fluent with Cision, WordPress, Mailchimp, Sprout Social, Microsoft Office, and Teams
- Strong writing and editing skills
- Ability to produce clear, concise, accurate, and on-message content across web, social media, print, and other formats
- Understanding of news cycles and what makes a story newsworthy
- Experience crafting compelling pitches and building press relationships
- Ability to produce content quickly and shift priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Cross-functional collaboration experience across organizational units, subject-matter experts, and partners
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to build, track, and adjust cross-departmental project timelines and meet deadlines
- Ability to build and refine communications processes and systems
- Experience using DSLR cameras and capturing basic event photography
- Familiarity with video production basics and working with photo and video vendors
- Hybrid work schedule; must live within commuting distance of New York City
