About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform entry-level technical work related to planning, engineering, design, analysis, research, development, testing, construction, maintenance, and operation of company equipment and facilities
- Prepare required orders and obtain right-of-way permissions to implement system improvements
- Establish service for and interact with residential, commercial, and industrial customers
- Determine customer needs for new services, service upgrades, and facility relocations
- Design facilities to meet customer needs
- Determine costs passed to customers and bill accordingly
- Contact the Project Design Group for advice on system improvements needed to serve new loads
- Obtain simple easements and consult Right of Way Agents for complex easements
- Participate in storm restoration and assess storm damage after gaining adequate field experience
- Learn and apply AEP Distribution Standards, NESC Codes, OSHA Rules, AEP Accounting Practices, CIAC Rules, AEP Tariffs, and safety procedures
- Maintain accurate records and assist with technical reports and papers
- Communicate with internal and external customers and collaborate with employees
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of related utility industry work experience; or Associate’s degree in electrical, electronic, civil, or mechanical engineering technology or related fields
- Associate degree in electrical, electronic, civil, or mechanical engineering technology or related fields plus 2 years of related utility industry work experience; or high school diploma or equivalent and 4 years of related utility industry work experience
- Valid driver's license
- Technical knowledge gained through an Associate Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering Technology
- Understanding of applicable standards, codes, and regulations
- Knowledge of relevant equipment, materials, systems, and business processes
- Basic computer literacy
- Ability to walk rights-of-way over varied terrain in adverse conditions in some locations
- Ability to carry and handle telescopic measuring sticks and switching sticks weighing 11 pounds
- Ability to use a brush axe or machete when required
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Distribution Design Studio, Electric Office, GIS mapping system, PDS, EEMS, TLM, STORMS, OPS, JERI, CAD, and other Microsoft applications
