About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Test fundamental protection and control devices and equipment periodically and as required
- Calibrate protection and control devices and equipment on schedule and as required
- Assist with switching at all voltage levels under proper dispatching authority
- Maintain test equipment in good working order
- Maintain accurate records, reports, and drawings
- Use computer devices to test, calibrate, and retrieve data from protection and control devices
- Assist with installation, maintenance, and operation of relays, power line carrier sets, station SCADA, communications equipment, and cables
- Troubleshoot and repair electromechanical relays
- Troubleshoot and repair microprocessor-based relays at card level
- Assist with diagnosis of equipment failures and protection misoperations, and perform corrective repairs
- Verify circuitry, installation, and equipment operation against electrical schematics before service
- Record test readings and results and verify compliance with specifications
- Perform basic fault analysis using oscillography data and relay settings
- Assist teams installing, testing, and commissioning new protection and control systems for capital projects
- Assist the on-site technical lead with contract wiremen and other field personnel
- Assist a trip testing team
- Respond to emergency call-outs and coordinate prompt restoration of customer service
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in engineering in an ABET-accredited Engineering Accreditation Commission program, or bachelor's degree in engineering technology in an ABET-accredited Technology Accreditation Commission program
- Entry-level position for new graduates with a bachelor's degree
- Must successfully complete the Physical Abilities Test (PAT)
- Must be able to distinguish colors on a standard color blindness test
- Working knowledge of current, potential, closing, and trip circuits
- Working knowledge of cable, lugs, and wire applied to protective relay and control circuits
- Working knowledge of assembly, anchoring, and interchangeability of switchboard panel-support and through systems
- Ability to read, understand, and correct electrical prints and diagrams
- Ability to use hand tools
- Ability to perform duties in an alert, safe, and business-like manner
- Ability to deal with customers and employees courteously and professionally
- Ability to interpret, analyze, and transmit facts graphically, orally, and in writing clearly and precisely
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license and meet vehicle operation requirements under applicable law
- Considerable travel and overtime may be required
- Ability to climb ladders and work at various heights
- Must be able to lift and carry required test equipment and tools
- Ability to work outdoors and in confined spaces
- Ability to switch station equipment energized up to 765kV using appropriate PPE
