About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform intermediate-level technical work related to planning, engineering, design, analysis, research, development, testing, construction, maintenance, and operation of company equipment and facilities
- Assist with defined portions of routine technical problems
- Perform assigned work under the coaching of higher-level employees
- Plan work according to AEP standard planning practices
- Prioritize routine work to meet company demands
- Maintain accurate records
- Apply technical knowledge to resolve problems
- Identify process-improvement opportunities and develop technical skills
- Compile, analyze, and interpret information needed to perform work and solve problems
- Communicate with internal and external customers
- Assist in preparing technical reports and papers
- Develop decision-making skills and understanding of local organizational responsibilities
- Patrol distribution power lines to determine damage where required
- Perform survey-related brush clearing and staking work where required
Requirements
What you’ll need- Associate degree in Electrical/Electronic/Civil/Mechanical Engineering Technology or related fields, or high school diploma/GED with the required related utility industry work experience
- Customer Design Technician Associate: high school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of related utility industry work experience, or an associate degree in a related engineering technology field
- Customer Design Technician: associate degree plus 2 years of related utility industry work experience, or high school diploma/equivalent plus 4 years of related utility industry work experience
- Customer Design Technician Senior: associate degree plus minimum 4 years of related utility industry work experience, or high school diploma/GED plus minimum 6 years of related utility industry work experience, including technical engineering projects
- Valid Driver's License
- Knowledge of standards, codes, regulations, equipment, materials, systems, and business processes
- Basic computer literacy, knowledge, and skills
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
- Ability to walk rights-of-way over various terrain in adverse conditions in some locations
- Ability to carry and handle telescopic measuring sticks and switching sticks weighing 11 pounds
- May need to use a brush axe or machete for clearing brush and survey work
