About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Patrol transmission lines and facilities from the ground and air to assess vegetation conditions and conductor distances
- Recommend utility vegetation operations, work plans, priorities, schedules, best management practices, and contractor requirements
- Capture patrol conditions in forestry computer systems and coordinate responses to imminent threats
- Maintain work, cost, production, and quality records and prepare reports
- Arrange vegetation management and facility access with landowners, governmental agencies, utilities, and other parties
- Investigate and resolve landowner concerns and constrained FAC-003 vegetation management areas
- Estimate vegetation management requirements and costs for construction and rebuilding projects
- Serve as subject-matter expert for vegetation clearing during project scoping, construction, and servicing
- Inspect contractors for safety and contract compliance and recommend acceptance or corrective action
- Identify and schedule aerial herbicide and aerial saw work, including required permitting
- Operate forestry computer programs and records systems
- Guide and train participants in vegetation management work practices and procedures
- Mentor Transmission Forester Associates as needed at the senior level
- Support Transmission Forestry leadership and staff in coordinating storm response at the senior level
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree in forestry, Urban Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Arboriculture, or a related field and 2–4 years of contract utility forester experience, depending on level
- Associate’s degree in a listed field and 4–6 years of utility vegetation management industry experience, depending on level
- High school diploma and 6–8 years as a contract forester or other related utility-industry position, depending on level
- Knowledge and safe use of pesticides
- Certified Pesticide Applicator's license required for each state within the forester’s area of responsibility
- International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification required
- ISA Utility Specialist required
- Completion of an “in the wires zone” aerial patrol course required
- Arborist certification desirable
- Tree Risk Assessment Qualification preferred
- Professional diplomacy to communicate and promote vegetation control projects to the public
- Courses in horticulture and/or vegetation management desirable
- Competency in GIS systems and Microsoft Office components including Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word, plus other analytical tools
- Extensive travel required
- Proficiency applying AEP Accounting Policies & Guidelines related to expense versus capitalization
- Medium physical work capacity, including exerting 20–50 pounds occasionally and 10–25 pounds frequently
