About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Support American Forests’ work with the USDA Forest Service in Montana through project and partnership development and execution
  • Work with the Region Director to advance regional reforestation activities and partnerships on National Forest System lands
  • Manage reforestation and forest resilience partnerships, including partner meetings, reporting, and budgeting
  • Advance forest restoration projects, plans, partnerships, and agreements
  • Oversee reforestation implementation, including planning, unit layout, contract administration, field implementation, quality control, and monitoring
  • Coordinate field data collection, analysis, adaptive management, protocols, templates, and best practices
  • Oversee field and safety logistics and ensure required safety training and practices
  • Maintain knowledge of silviculture, reforestation, forestry, and natural resource management developments
  • Build and maintain relationships with agencies and regional stakeholders
  • Supervise seasonal and full-time employees, including timesheets, leave approvals, performance assessments, recruitment, hiring, and training
  • Provide in-field supervisory support for staff, field crews, and field support personnel
  • Administer grants and agreements, including budgets, invoices, payment requests, match documentation, and modifications
  • Support contractor relationship management and oversight
  • Assist with meetings, conferences, events, presentations, site visits, and field tours
  • Report to the Director, Northern Rockies and potentially supervise up to five direct reports

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry or natural resources with at least three (3) years of experience; or a Master’s degree in forestry or natural resources with at least two (2) years of experience
  • Field forestry and/or reforestation experience
  • Experience planning and implementing forest management actions on federal lands
  • Experience conducting fieldwork and implementing field-based projects
  • Experience supervising teams of people, ideally in field-based and remote environments
  • Working knowledge and experience in project and partnership management
  • Strong organization, project management, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with GPS and GIS, including AGOL, Field Maps, and Survey123, for mapping and geospatial data analysis
  • Current First Aid certification or willingness to be sponsored in obtaining it
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to travel frequently to work sites
  • State forestry license and/or Society of American Foresters Certified Forester certification preferred
  • Partnership or project experience with USDA Forest Service preferred
  • Contract oversight and administration experience preferred
  • Ability to speak Spanish preferred
