About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Develop and execute projects and partnerships with the USDA Forest Service in Montana
  • Collaborate closely with American Forests and USDA Forest Service staff
  • Oversee program and field logistics
  • Support grant and agreement administration, including invoicing, reporting, grant writing, reforecasting budgets, payment requests, match documentation, and modifications
  • Manage field staff supported by USFS agreements
  • Advance regional reforestation activities and partnerships on National Forest System lands
  • Manage reforestation and forest resilience partnerships, meetings, reporting, and budgeting
  • Develop new forest restoration projects, plans, partnerships, and agreements
  • Oversee reforestation activities, including planning, unit layout, contract administration, field implementation, quality control, planting, release, monitoring, surveys, and inventory
  • Coordinate field data collection, analysis, and adaptive management
  • Oversee field and safety logistics and ensure required safety training
  • Coordinate field protocols, templates, and best practices
  • Maintain knowledge of silviculture, reforestation, forestry, and natural resource management
  • Build relationships with agencies and regional stakeholders
  • Supervise seasonal and full-time employees, including timesheets, leave approvals, performance assessments, and administrative processes
  • Lead recruitment, hiring, and training as needed
  • Provide in-field supervisory support to staff and field crews
  • Support contractor relationship management and oversight
  • Assist with meetings, conferences, and events
  • Conduct public presentations
  • Plan and lead site visits and field tours
  • Report to the Director, Northern Rockies and supervise or support up to five direct reports

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry or natural resources with at least three (3) years of experience; or a Master’s degree in forestry or natural resources with at least two (2) years of experience
  • Field forestry and/or reforestation experience
  • Experience planning and implementing forest management actions on federal lands
  • Experience conducting fieldwork and implementing field-based projects
  • Experience supervising teams, ideally in field-based and remote environments
  • Working knowledge and experience in project and partnership management
  • Partnership or project experience with USDA Forest Service preferred
  • Strong organization, project management, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • State forestry license and/or Society of American Foresters Certified Forester certification preferred
  • Current First Aid certification or willingness to be sponsored in obtaining
  • Experience with GPS and GIS, including AGOL, Field Maps, and Survey123, for mapping and geospatial data analysis
  • Experience in contract oversight and administration preferred
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to travel frequently to work sites
  • Spanish language ability preferred
  • Ability to lift materials weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Willingness and ability to work in varying terrain, dense vegetation, wildlife risks, and hot, wet, and cold conditions
