About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Support project teams collecting and disseminating valid and reliable data on how U.S. education compares internationally
  • Provide technical support and coordinate research, operational, and analytic activities for international large-scale assessments and surveys, including TIMSS, PISA, and TALIS
  • Oversee study activities across instrument development and review, study operations, data quality review, analysis, reporting, and dissemination
  • Contribute to development, analysis, and interpretation of international education statistics and research findings
  • Translate technical information into clear, actionable insights for diverse audiences
  • Manage day-to-day project operations as principal investigator, project director, or task lead
  • Lead collaborative project teams, timelines, staff assignments, budgets, and deliverables
  • Identify research problems and design applied research studies
  • Apply subject-matter expertise to design and implement impactful research projects
  • Develop study designs with aligned research questions, methodologies, and analytic plans
  • Lead and contribute to research proposals for federal, state, foundation, and other clients
  • Devise innovative solutions to practical applied-research challenges
  • Lead data collection and analysis efforts
  • Oversee qualitative and quantitative data collection tools, including interview protocols, focus group guides, and surveys
  • Supervise field-based data collection, including interviews, observations, focus groups, and document reviews
  • Conduct or oversee data analysis using appropriate tools and techniques
  • Communicate study progress and findings
  • Prepare reports, briefs, visualizations, and other materials for clients and stakeholders
  • Represent AIR professionally in client interactions and manage client and stakeholder relationships
  • Foster collaborative working relationships and contribute creatively to project teams

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • PhD in related subject area (e.g., Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Public Policy, or related field) with 3+ years of relevant experience or Master’s degree with 7+ years of relevant experience
  • Firm understanding of implementation science
  • Ability to take big ideas and develop work plans and timelines
  • Experience at contract research and/or evaluation organization(s)
  • Experience with data collection methodologies, including structured interviews, observations, and survey research
  • Experience with quantitative and/or qualitative analytic software packages such as Stata, R, Excel, NVivo, and Access
  • Experience managing project and/or task teams on research and evaluation projects
  • Experience building and maintaining client and partner relationships
  • Experience with business pursuit, such as grant and proposal writing
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, communication, negotiation, presentation, professional development delivery, facilitation, and client management skills
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy when writing
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a virtual work environment
  • Currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis; employment-based visa sponsorship is unavailable
  • May need to meet certain residency requirements depending on project work
  • Selected candidates must adhere to child safeguarding standards and undergo reference and background checks
