About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Expand Amgen’s computational toolbox for assessing the safety of small molecule drug candidates and potentially other modalities
  • Work with computational scientists and nonclinical safety experts on early drug-discovery safety predictions
  • Identify, curate, and compare external and internal data, including chemical structures, assay results, and exposure information
  • Develop and evaluate structural alerts, analogue-based read-across, machine learning, and models integrating experimental results with other safety evidence
  • Evaluate model performance on relevant compounds
  • Document context of use, uncertainty, applicability, and limitations
  • Collaborate with computational scientists, medicinal chemists, and toxicologists to guide compound prioritization and follow-up experiments
  • Present results and deliver reproducible analyses, documented model prototypes, and development recommendations
  • Provide mechanisms for retraining as additional data is generated over time

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Must be available to work a part-time schedule
  • Expected continued enrollment in an accredited college or university following the internship program / co-op
  • Student must be located in the United States for the duration of the internship program
  • 18 years or older
  • Graduated with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Currently enrolled in an MBA, Master’s, PharmD, or Ph.D. program from an accredited college or university
  • Completion of the first year of the applicable graduate program before the internship starts
  • Currently pursuing a graduate degree in cheminformatics, bioinformatics, computational chemistry or biology, data science, statistics, toxicology, or a related field
  • Experience using Python to analyze scientific data
  • Familiarity with statistical modeling and machine learning, including model evaluation principles
  • Ability to communicate technical findings clearly and work with scientists from different disciplines
  • Experience with cheminformatics, predictive toxicology, or in vitro assay data analysis
  • Familiarity with small molecule drug discovery or nonclinical safety assessment
  • Experience combining data from multiple sources and documenting reproducible computational workflows
  • Familiarity with version control and collaborative software development
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. for the duration of this program
