About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Support the Flight Dynamics Research Facility at NASA Langley Research Center
  • Support the Entry Systems Modeling project
  • Develop free flight and forced oscillation model designs for rapid prototype fabrication
  • Conduct or support forced oscillation and free flight tests investigating the dynamic stability of blunt entry vehicles
  • Develop CAD models in .igs, .stp, and native CAD formats
  • Develop CAD models for oscillation configurations with mounting interfaces at specified reference points
  • Design geometry for thermal inset fasteners and reliable mounting to the balance sting
  • Create CAD solid models of free flight wind tunnel models using FDM 3D printing methods or similar
  • Design models to enable a movable center of gravity
  • Produce static and dynamic stability data and free flight dynamics for trajectory simulation validation

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Undergraduate or Graduate student with a degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in developing CAD models or 2 semesters of relevant CAD course work
  • Experience with .igs or .stp, as well as the native CAD format
  • Ability to work onsite at NASA Langley
  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residence required
  • Ability to create CAD solid models using FDM 3D printing methods or similar
  • Ability to design models accommodating thermal inset fasteners and movable centers of gravity
