About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Monitor and supervise jail inmates and related activities
- Maintain facility, inmate and employee security and safety through surveillance
- Monitor cameras, alarms, doors and security controls
- Enforce inmate rules and facility regulations
- Conduct inmate counts and searches
- Prevent introduction of contraband and weapons
- Respond to and assess disturbances, fires, escape attempts, contraband recovery and medical emergencies
- Restore order and security during emergencies
- Mediate inmate conflicts and de-escalate tension
- Handle inmate intake and release
- Obtain required information, documentation and credentials from arresting or escorting officers
- Supervise recreational, visiting and court appearance periods
- Identify and monitor at-risk inmates with mental illness, alcoholism or drug addiction
- Prepare written reports and activity logs
- Work weekends and holidays in a 24/7 jail facility
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma or equivalent education
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to credibly testify in a court of law
- Must pass a thorough physical and psychological examination
- Must successfully complete a background investigation
- Experience using de-escalation techniques in a work setting preferred
- Previous work-related experience preferred
- Knowledge of CPR principles, procedures and techniques preferred
- Advanced First Aid certification preferred
- Secondary education in corrections, law enforcement, criminal justice, behavioral/social science or related field preferred
- Evidence-Based Practice Corrections Professional Certification from an accredited school preferred
- Must pass applicable pre-employment criminal/driving background check, drug screen and DOT physical
- Must comply with Sheriff’s Office tattoo, scar and brand policy
- Applicants are not required to be certified by the Minnesota Peace Officer’s Standard Board
