About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide daily oversight of field crews and contractors for highway construction and improvement projects
- Conduct construction inspections and testing of grading, paving, curb, concrete, and materials
- Ensure contract compliance and adherence to project specifications, quality, and safety standards
- Maintain construction project records and documentation, including pay quantities and materials, for state and federal guidelines
- Conduct topographical construction surveying, including setting control, collecting data, and construction staking
- Collect field information using complex survey instruments
- Record highway alignments, vertical profiles, storm sewer designs, and material quantity calculations
- Utilize design information and survey notes to construct projects and perform accurate staking
- Compute quantities and check computations performed by others
- Provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group as assigned
- Work across office environments and indoor/outdoor county construction sites
Requirements
What you’ll need- Accreditation from a technical school or applicable trades program
- At least 4 years of job-related experience
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for required education on a year-for-year basis
- Successfully pass driver’s license background check
- Experience using Computer Aided Design (CAD) and drafting preferred
- Knowledge of design standards for construction, survey and inspection of county roads and county state aid highways preferred
- Experience using engineering principles and techniques involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of county highways and bridges preferred
- Strong knowledge of surveying principles and procedures preferred
- Ability to perform physical activities including bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, walking on sloped or uneven terrain, and handling/carrying equipment
- Regular lifting of 0–25 lbs. and occasional lifting of up to 75 lbs.
- Ability to drive a county vehicle and/or personal vehicle between work sites
- Successfully pass applicable pre-employment criminal/driving background check, drug screen, DOT physical, and/or other qualification checks
