About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Oversee project activities involving multiple staff members
  • Provide day-to-day direction for drafting construction plans, topographical and construction surveys, and roadway and bridge development
  • Provide expert-level support in testing and inspections of grading, paving, curb, concrete, and materials
  • Coordinate project details and timelines with contract administrators, utility companies, construction surveyors, contractors, partnering agencies, and residents
  • Maintain construction project records and documentation, including pay quantities and materials
  • Serve as Project Manager through all phases of construction and coordinate daily operations with field crews and contractors
  • Compute contractor work quantities and materials provided; verify others’ quantity computations
  • Conduct topographical construction surveying, including setting control, collecting data, and construction staking
  • Collect field information using complex survey instruments
  • Record highway alignments, vertical profiles, storm sewer designs, and material quantity calculations
  • Ensure design information transferred to survey notes results in accurate staking
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring to subordinate staff and direct daily work and weekly timelines
  • Enter monthly quantities into pay application software to generate contractor payments

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Requires accreditation from a technical school or applicable trades program and at least 6 years of job-related experience
  • In lieu of the required education, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis
  • Successfully pass driver’s license background check
  • Experience in highway design, construction, and working with Minnesota State DOT Manuals
  • Experience providing technical expertise to other sections, departments, and outside agencies
  • Knowledge of all design standards for construction, survey and inspection of county roads and county state aid highways
  • Experience using engineering principles and techniques involved in the design, construction, and proper maintenance of county highways and bridges
  • Strong knowledge of surveying principles and procedures
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Pre-employment criminal/driving background check, drug screen and DOT physical, and/or other qualifications checks may be required
  • Ability to perform varied physical activity, including bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, walking on sloped or uneven terrain, and handling/carrying equipment
  • Regular lifting of 0-25 lbs. and occasional lifting of up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to work in construction sites, rough terrain, changing weather, and possible exposure to chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, vibration, and other hazards
