About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Assist forensic pathologists by performing death scene investigations
- Respond to death scenes promptly, often on an on-call basis
- Inspect bodies and surrounding areas and take appropriate photographs
- Make presumptive identifications and facilitate positive identification
- Obtain demographic, medical, and social histories through interviews
- Notify next of kin compassionately and provide support during grief
- Make preliminary determinations of cause and manner of death
- Determine whether forensic autopsy is warranted and assess jurisdiction
- Confer with forensic pathologists as needed
- Assess body, weapon, wound, and postmortem details for consistency with the scene and reported history
- Secure the decedent’s private property
- Document scenes and circumstances through written reports, photographs, and sketches
- Collect, inventory, package, and maintain chain of custody for property and evidence
- Coordinate with law enforcement and other investigative agencies
- Maintain confidentiality
- Provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to subordinate staff as assigned
- Travel occasionally to other county work sites
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of job-related experience
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for required education on a year-for-year basis
- Valid driver’s license and vehicle available for business use
- Degree in Physical or Social Sciences, Criminal Justice, or related field preferred
- Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
- Ability to investigate, collect, interpret, and report information regarding death scenes and medical history
- Ability to communicate effectively with grieving or highly distraught individuals, medical community, law enforcement, public safety agencies, funeral homes, and the community
- Ability to organize and manage multiple activities with precision
- Knowledge of pharmacological and medical terminology and disease processes helpful
- Candidates must reside within one hour of Carver or Sibley County or be willing to relocate within three weeks of hire
- Successful completion of applicable criminal/driving background check, drug screen, DOT physical, and/or other qualification checks may be required
- Ability to perform required physical activities, including regular lifting of 100 lbs. or more and occasional pushing of carts over 300 lbs.
- Ability to tolerate potential exposure to bodily fluids, infectious agents, radiation, toxic or caustic chemicals, and other hazards
