About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Manage smaller or less-complex structural engineering projects under the oversight of a Project Manager or Project Executive
  • Support planning and execution of larger or more complex projects
  • Balance project management responsibilities with technical structural engineering work
  • Develop project work plans, schedules, staffing plans, and internal assignments
  • Coordinate engineering and BIM/modeling activities and communicate project priorities and deadlines
  • Provide technical direction and guidance to Project Engineers and BIM/modeling team members
  • Review engineering calculations, analysis models, structural drawings, and project deliverables
  • Coordinate structural requirements with architects, MEP/FP consultants, contractors, fabricators, and other project participants
  • Serve as a primary day-to-day contact for clients on assigned smaller projects
  • Participate in project meetings and communicate project status, design requirements, coordination items, and action items
  • Develop and maintain professional client relationships
  • Identify technical, coordination, schedule, staffing, scope, and execution issues and communicate impacts and recommended solutions
  • Coordinate responses to RFIs, submittals, field conditions, and construction-phase engineering items
  • Monitor project activities against schedules, deliverables, staffing plans, and project requirements
  • Assist with monitoring project performance, scope changes, and additional services
  • Assist with developing project scopes, fee proposals, schedules, staffing plans, and resource requirements
  • Maintain project documentation and communication
  • Participate in QA/QC processes and help ensure Apex engineering standards and delivery processes are followed
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and feedback to Project Engineer I, II, and III team members
  • Support professional development of less-experienced team members
  • Participate in Apex Technical Advisory Groups and contribute to engineering standards, design tools, workflows, and lessons learned
  • Continue developing project management skills in scope management, scheduling, staffing, budgeting, client communication, risk identification, and project execution
  • Perform structural analysis and design as needed

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Architectural Engineering from an accredited university
  • Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Structural Engineer (SE) licensure required, as applicable to the position and jurisdiction
  • Typically five or more years of relevant structural engineering experience with progressively increasing technical and project responsibilities
  • Strong technical knowledge of structural analysis, building systems, load paths, and structural systems using steel, concrete, masonry, and other applicable materials
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable building codes, ASCE 7, and structural material design standards
  • Proficiency with structural analysis and design software
  • Ability to review complex analysis models, calculations, and engineering work prepared by other engineers
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting architectural, structural, and MEP/FP construction documents
  • Ability to identify structural coordination requirements, conflicts, and project impacts
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate effectively with architects, engineers, contractors, fabricators, clients, and other project participants
  • Working knowledge of project management fundamentals, including project scope, schedules, staffing, fees, budgets, additional services, resource planning, and project deliverables
  • Ability to organize and coordinate multiple engineering and project management activities while maintaining accountability for deadlines, quality, and project requirements
  • Ability to take ownership of assigned projects or project responsibilities and make appropriate day-to-day decisions
  • Ability to identify potential project risks and communicate them proactively
  • Ability to provide clear technical direction, constructive feedback, and appropriate support to engineering and BIM/modeling team members
