About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform structural analysis and design of increasingly complex structural components and systems
- Develop gravity and lateral building analysis models, including three-dimensional models
- Develop and apply gravity, wind, seismic, snow, rain, and other applicable building loads
- Evaluate structural load paths and transfer of forces and reactions among structural components and systems
- Review analysis results and identify unexpected forces, reactions, deflections, or structural behavior
- Apply building codes and material design standards
- Prepare structural calculations and engineering documentation
- Read and interpret architectural and structural construction documents
- Develop structural design information for project drawings and models
- Provide engineering information to BIM and modeling team members
- Review assigned portions of drawings and models for accurate incorporation of design information
- Review structural drawings, models, shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and construction-phase documentation
- Identify technical questions, unusual analysis results, missing information, and issues requiring engineering direction
- Participate in internal project meetings
- Attend external project meetings when appropriate
- Apply Apex engineering standards, design procedures, QA/QC processes, documentation practices, and project delivery procedures
- Incorporate technical comments and review feedback
- Communicate progress and seek technical guidance when needed
- Develop knowledge of constructability, fabrication, erection, and construction practices
- Provide technical assistance to Project Engineer I team members when requested
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Architectural Engineering from an accredited university
- Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is a plus
- Typically two to four years of relevant structural engineering experience
- Engineer Intern (EI/EIT) certification preferred
- Demonstrated progress toward obtaining Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Structural Engineer (SE) licensure, as applicable
- Understanding of structural load paths, load development, structural analysis, and design of common structural components and systems
- Working knowledge of ASCE 7
- Ability to determine and apply gravity, wind, seismic, snow, rain, and other applicable building loads
- Working knowledge of applicable building codes and structural material standards
- Proficiency with Apex’s preferred structural analysis and design software
- Ability to develop analysis models for typical structural systems
- Ability to review structural analysis results and recognize forces, reactions, deflections, or structural behavior requiring additional evaluation
- Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural construction documents
- Ability to prepare clear, organized structural calculations and document design assumptions, analysis methods, and engineering decisions
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
- Ability to receive, incorporate, and apply technical feedback and review comments
- Initiative and willingness to expand technical knowledge, engineering judgment, software proficiency, and understanding of building design and construction
- Diploma/Certificate
- American Citizenship/Legally able to work in the United States of America
