About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Perform advanced structural analysis and design for complex structural components and building systems
  • Develop, review, and evaluate three-dimensional gravity and lateral building analysis models
  • Evaluate analysis results, load distribution, forces, reactions, deflections, stability concerns, and modeling conditions
  • Develop and evaluate structural design solutions considering performance, constructability, efficiency, coordination, and project requirements
  • Interpret and apply ASCE 7, IBC, AISC, ACI, TMS, SJI, and other applicable codes and standards
  • Develop, review, and finalize structural calculations and engineering documentation
  • Interpret construction documents and develop coordinated structural designs
  • Review architectural and MEP/FP drawings and models for structural impacts and coordination issues
  • Coordinate structural design requirements with architects, consultants, and other engineering disciplines
  • Coordinate with BIM/modeling team members on complex detailing, modeling, and documentation
  • Review structural drawings and models for consistency with calculations, design intent, project requirements, and Apex standards
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, and construction-phase documentation
  • Participate in external project meetings and technical coordination discussions
  • Communicate technical concepts, structural requirements, engineering concerns, and design decisions
  • Identify technical, coordination, constructability, and information issues and recommend solutions
  • Support Project Managers and Project Executives with design alternatives, constructability, technical risks, and complex engineering issues
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to Project Engineer I and II team members
  • Review less-experienced engineers’ work and provide constructive technical feedback
  • Contribute to technical discussions, knowledge sharing, lessons learned, and improved engineering practices
  • Participate in Apex Technical Advisory Groups
  • Contribute to engineering standards, design tools, calculation procedures, software practices, and technical resources
  • Apply Apex engineering standards, QA/QC procedures, documentation requirements, and delivery processes
  • Continue developing expertise in structural systems, codes, analysis methods, constructability, fabrication, erection, and emerging technologies
  • Manage priorities, meet deadlines, communicate concerns early, and deliver accurate engineering work

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Architectural Engineering from an accredited university
  • Master’s degree in Structural Engineering or a related engineering discipline preferred
  • Typically four or more years of relevant structural engineering experience with progressively increasing technical responsibility
  • Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Structural Engineer (SE) licensure required, as applicable to the position and jurisdiction
  • Proficiency in structural analysis and design of building systems using steel, concrete, masonry, and other structural materials
  • Strong understanding of structural load development, load paths, gravity and lateral systems, and structural component interaction
  • Proficiency with ASCE 7, applicable building codes, and material design standards
  • Proficiency with Apex’s preferred structural analysis and design software
  • Ability to develop, review, and evaluate three-dimensional structural analysis models
  • Ability to independently evaluate analysis results and identify unusual structural behavior
  • Proficiency reading and interpreting architectural and structural construction documents
  • Working knowledge of MEP/FP and other discipline drawings
  • Ability to develop clear, organized, and comprehensive structural calculations and engineering documentation
  • Ability to evaluate structural design alternatives and identify practical solutions
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate technical requirements with project participants
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, engineering judgment, and attention to detail
