About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Manage large, complex, high-profile, and/or fast-paced structural engineering projects from initiation through design, documentation, permitting, and construction under a Project Executive
  • Own project scope, fee and budget, schedule, staffing, deliverables, coordination, client communication, and execution strategy
  • Establish and adjust project execution plans, schedules, staffing strategies, milestones, and priorities
  • Monitor financial performance, staffing, progress, remaining effort, and project health
  • Identify scope changes, additional services, contractual concerns, and conditions affecting fee, schedule, staffing, or profitability
  • Lead project teams and provide direction to Project Managers, Associate Project Managers, engineers, BIM/modeling team members, and technical specialists
  • Coordinate staffing and resources across multiple projects and teams
  • Provide high-level technical leadership for structural analysis, design, modeling, constructability, coordination, and construction issues
  • Oversee deliverables and QA/QC processes
  • Lead coordination with architects, MEP/FP consultants, contractors, fabricators, owners, and other project participants
  • Lead external meetings and serve as a senior client-facing representative of Apex
  • Develop and maintain client and project-partner relationships
  • Anticipate and address technical, coordination, schedule, staffing, financial, contractual, and client risks
  • Escalate significant risks and issues and recommend resolutions
  • Develop project scopes, fee proposals, staffing plans, schedules, execution strategies, and additional-service proposals
  • Participate in business development and marketing, including proposals, interviews, client relationships, and industry events
  • Identify opportunities within existing client relationships and communicate them to leadership
  • Mentor Project Managers, Associate Project Managers, Project Engineers, and other team members
  • Provide feedback and professional development support
  • Participate in Technical Advisory Groups and improve engineering standards, project management practices, QA/QC procedures, technical resources, and delivery processes
  • Identify lessons learned and implement improved project management and engineering practices
  • Promote consistency in project execution, client service, technical quality, and communication
  • Support Project Executives with resource planning, project portfolio discussions, client strategy, and organizational initiatives

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Architectural Engineering from an accredited university
  • Master’s degree in Structural Engineering preferred
  • Typically ten or more years of relevant structural engineering experience, including significant project management experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Structural Engineer (SE) licensure required
  • Experience independently managing large, complex, high-profile, and/or fast-paced structural engineering projects
  • Experience managing project scope, fees and budgets, schedules, staffing, additional services, resource planning, and overall project financial performance
  • Advanced knowledge of structural engineering principles, structural systems, building codes, design standards, construction practices, and project delivery
  • Strong technical judgment on complex structural analysis, design, constructability, coordination, and construction-related issues
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary project teams and coordinate Project Managers, Associate Project Managers, engineers, BIM/modeling team members, and technical specialists
  • Ability to provide leadership and project management guidance to Project Managers and Associate Project Managers
  • Ability to anticipate project risks, evaluate impacts, develop solutions, and communicate significant issues and recommendations
  • Advanced understanding of architectural, structural, MEP/FP, and other discipline construction documents and multidisciplinary coordination
  • Experience leading client and external project meetings and communicating complex technical, project, contractual, and schedule matters
  • Strong understanding of professional services agreements, project scope, additional services, staffing, schedules, project progress, budgets, and financial performance
  • Ability to develop and maintain client relationships and contribute to client retention, repeat business, and continued client engagement
  • Ability to develop project scopes, fees, staffing plans, schedules, and execution strategies for complex structural engineering projects
  • Ability to identify business development opportunities, support pursuits and proposals, and represent Apex professionally
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects, teams, priorities, and client relationships while maintaining accountability for quality, schedule, financial performance, and communication
