About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Work in the field under direct supervision of the Crew Leader and report to the Regional Manager
- Collaborate with trail crew members and volunteers to complete routine trail maintenance and trail construction/reconstruction projects
- Implement trail construction, reconstruction, and maintenance projects with A.T. clubs and partner agencies
- Determine logistical needs in advance and ensure tools, equipment, materials, personnel, and other resources are available
- Train volunteer and staff trail crew members in trail design, construction, reconstruction, and maintenance best practices
- Ensure safe and sanitary conditions at field camps and work sites
- Transport crews safely and respond appropriately to emergency situations
- Promote a welcoming, motivated, safe, and inclusive crew environment
- Follow crew leader and supervisor direction regarding duties, logistics, timetables, and projects
- Submit biweekly timesheets and assist with project reports
- Make purchases of food, supplies, gear, and materials according to ATC financial procedures
- Travel on foot over rough terrain and long distances while carrying equipment in possible inclement weather
- Use computer systems including Microsoft Office, Office 365, APD, NetSuite, Salesforce, ESRI GIS, NPS database, and Google applications
Requirements
What you’ll need- At least one season of experience in building/rebuilding trails, including constructing sidehill, stone steps or cribbing, log steps or cribbing, improving drainage, or addressing erosion
- Two or more seasons of front/backcountry camping or working outdoors preferred
- Good mental and physical health
- Ability to hike up to 10 miles per day in steep, mountainous terrain
- Commitment to ATC management and resource protection efforts
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Ability to effectively communicate with individuals, groups, and partners
- Ability to live independently and work in a remote area with minimal supervision
- Strong hiking and outdoor experience
- Experience working with volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels
- Basic knowledge of Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s cooperative management system preferred
- Comfortable working multiple days outdoors in frequently adverse weather conditions
- Leave No Trace Trainer or Master Educator desirable, with awareness training provided
- Current Wilderness First Aid or higher and CPR certification preferred, with training provided
- Willingness to participate in required training, including USFS chainsaw and crosscut saw certification, WFR/WFA, advanced rockwork, rigging, and safe driving
- Regular use of a computer required
- Access to a personal vehicle strongly preferred
- Ability to hike for extended periods and stand for long periods
- Ability to perform routine moderate lifting
- Ability to carry up to 50 pounds in a backpack over a minimum of five miles
- Ability to traverse rough, uneven terrain and wet, slippery surfaces
- Offer contingent upon successful MVR report
