About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Conduct intakes and interview clients, particularly clients requiring in-language services
  • Assist with case development and fact-gathering
  • Collaborate with attorneys, community advocates, paralegals, and other staff on client and organizational advocacy goals
  • Provide administrative support with client data and documents
  • Provide advocacy support at meetings with clients and groups of clients
  • Provide logistical support so clients can attend necessary appointments or appearances
  • Under attorney supervision, provide legal advice and brief services at Housing Rights legal clinics and other clinics
  • Accompany clients to meetings, interviews, appointments, and appearances, either offsite or virtually
  • Support clients in exercising their rights and accessing needed resources
  • Serve as an in-language point of contact for Housing Rights clients
  • Maintain accessible Chinese-language contact services using communication platforms determined by client community needs
  • Provide interpretation and translation for clients and ALC staff
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community members and partners
  • Collaborate with allies and organizations in joint community efforts and initiatives
  • Conduct community outreach about tenant rights and develop educational materials
  • Participate in community coalitions and represent ALC in community outreach and engagement opportunities

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Fluency in Cantonese
  • Ability to read and write at a proficient level in Chinese
  • Bachelor’s degree, or combination of equivalent education and work experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing the rights of low-income, people of color, immigrant, tenant, or worker communities
  • Excellent research, analytical, written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills
  • Ability to think creatively, be strategic, and exercise good judgment
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups and individuals
  • Ability to work well under time pressure
  • Ability to work some weekends and evenings
  • Proficient with Google and Microsoft Suite
  • Fluency in Mandarin (highly desirable)
  • Familiarity with San Francisco’s housing rights landscape (highly desirable)
  • Experience working with community members who are experiencing stressful situations (highly desirable)
  • Experience with community organizing, coalition building or advocacy campaigns (highly desirable)
  • Experience with or knowledge about housing, homelessness, land use, or community development (highly desirable)
