About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Conduct intake interviews with potential clients, including incarcerated or detained individuals
  • Consult with attorneys regarding next steps and provide referrals
  • Respond to client and community-member mail and communications
  • Build relationships and maintain regular communication with clients and family members
  • Schedule meetings, interviews, and depositions
  • Request records, gather evidence, draft declarations, prepare testimony, and prepare application forms for attorney review
  • Support clients following release from prison or immigration detention through referrals and assistance obtaining identification and work permits
  • Coordinate interpretation and translation and collect supporting evidence
  • Draft pleadings, contracts, correspondence, cover letters, forms, and case-related documents for attorney review
  • Collect, examine, organize, cite-check, edit, and proofread legal documents and evidence
  • Prepare, file, and serve submissions in immigration agencies and courts, including USCIS, immigration courts, the BIA, state courts, and federal courts
  • Manage electronic and physical filing systems
  • Input, manage, and maintain client and case data
  • Assist with legal clinics and community presentations
  • Collaborate with program leadership, attorneys, paralegals, and intake coordinators
  • Provide casework information and data for grant reports
  • Participate in required check-in, staff, team, and organizational meetings

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing the rights of low-income, people of color, and/or immigrant communities
  • Two (2) or more years of relevant legal assistant experience
  • A bachelor’s degree or an advanced degree and a minimum of one year of law-related experience
  • Experience working with low-income immigrant communities and/or incarcerated/formerly incarcerated individuals preferred
  • Excellent writing, communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team and manage multiple tasks in a timely manner
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues of diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Discretion and professionalism when handling sensitive and confidential information
  • Commitment to social justice
  • Technological proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Slack, Clio, and other relevant software applications
  • Proficiency in an Asian language or Spanish preferred
  • Cover letter, resume, writing sample of no more than ten (10) pages, and three professional references, including at least two direct supervisors
