About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Support attorneys in all phases of litigation, from case initiation through trial, appeals, and post-trial proceedings
- Assist with drafting court filings, including pleadings, motions, notices, and proposed orders
- File documents in federal and state courts, including appellate courts, and arrange service of process
- Assist with responding to and propounding discovery, reviewing documents, organizing exhibits, and summarizing depositions and discovery evidence
- Provide hearing and trial support, including trial and arbitration preparation, assembling binders, organizing exhibits, making travel arrangements, and assisting attorneys during hearings and trial
- Prepare appellate records and appendices by compiling and reviewing trial court documents and transcripts
- Conduct initial client interviews and factual investigations; gather case facts and coordinate witness schedules
- Identify and assess legal issues and perform legal research on statutes, case law, and court rules
- Proofread, cite-check, and Bluebook court briefs and discovery documents
- Maintain electronic case notes, deadlines, and files using legal management software and databases
- Prepare retainers and forms and organize documents in SharePoint
- Perform case management, administrative, and clerical duties, including entering client and case data, copying, filing, processing invoices, and documenting financial transactions
- Provide or coordinate qualified translators and interpreters to ensure language access when bilingual
- Participate in supervisor check-ins, staff meetings, team meetings, organization meetings, annual retreats, anniversary dinner, and San Francisco Bay Area meetings
- Perform additional duties as needed
Requirements
What you’ll need- Five or more years of experience working as a paralegal, including in complex litigation
- Experience supporting cases from beginning to end
- Understanding of common litigation practices, procedures, and workflow
- Bachelor’s degree, or paralegal certificate from a program approved by the American Bar Association preferred
- Strong understanding of Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, California Rules of Court, local court rules, and legal terminology
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice and/or immigrant communities
- Proficiency in LexisNexis and Westlaw, or similar legal research platforms
- Excellent written, verbal, and communication skills
- Superior analytical and reasoning abilities
- Strong organization, motivation, attention to detail, and problem-solving ability
- Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment
- Ability to manage several projects simultaneously and handle high-volume, fast-paced activity
- Familiarity with legal case management systems, specifically Clio, is a plus
- Fluency in another language is highly desirable
- Experience working with individuals whose primary language is not English, people with disabilities, people experiencing a crisis, or people living in poverty is highly desirable
- Experience working in a nonprofit legal service or other direct-service environment is highly desirable
- Ability to provide culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, and empathetic services
- Some evening and weekend work may be required
