About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Engage with business development experts to grow the bioinformatics team through grants, contracts, and collaborative agreements
- Translate client needs into analysis services and define deliverables and timetables
- Ensure the quality and timeliness of ABiL work
- Interface with collaborators, subject matter experts, industry leaders, clients, and external partners
- Lead bioinformaticians and software developers
- Manage project work, assign responsibilities, and evaluate progress
- Identify, recruit, and evaluate employees, contractors, and student trainees
- Train ABiL team members in bioinformatics and genome analysis
- Develop cutting-edge bioinformatics solutions for diverse experimental questions
- Conduct bioinformatics and genomics research with internal and external collaborators
- Develop modular, reusable bioinformatics analysis pipeline components
- Ensure pipeline components use appropriate, state-of-the-art tools and integrate seamlessly
- Develop, deliver, and maintain traditional and online bioinformatics and genomics training modules
- Train collaborators and trainees
- Perform quality control, assembly, annotation, and analysis of prokaryotic and eukaryotic whole genome sequences
- Manage large bacterial genome sequence files and databases, including uploading information to NCBI or similar databanks
- Document work practices and maintain high ethical and confidentiality standards
Requirements
What you’ll need- PhD degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics or Biology with at least 24 semester hours in mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics, or informatics
- Proficiency in the use of various whole genome sequence analysis tools
- Proficiency in the assembly, analysis, and annotation of genomic data from sequencing platforms such as Illumina, 454, IonTorrent and PacBio
- 5-6 years of experience working as a bioinformatician with demonstrated solutions published in peer-reviewed publications
- Demonstrated experience with Unix (BASH scripting)
- Demonstrated experience with diverse bioinformatics software tools for NGS data analysis
- Demonstrated experience coding in Perl and/or Python
- Demonstrated experience with relational databases such as MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server
- Demonstrated experience with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) analysis
- Demonstrated experience leading bioinformatics-focused projects to completion, including group dynamics and client interactions
- Expertise in bioinformatics theory and application of a wide range of bioinformatics tools
- Ability to configure and maintain a Unix/Linux bioinformatics computing environment
- Exceptional written, oral, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Experience with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft SharePoint
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
- Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident or have authorization for employment in the United States
