Take end-to-end technical ownership of significant backend systems, features, and integrations
Translate ambiguous business requirements into scalable technical solutions
Lead technical design discussions and architecture, framework, API, data-model, performance, and implementation decisions
Identify technical risks and propose solutions
Balance short-term delivery with long-term maintainability and platform architecture
Own the quality, reliability, and successful delivery of solutions
Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and provide technical guidance
Conduct code reviews and promote clean code, design patterns, testing, documentation, and engineering best practices
Design and implement scalable, secure, maintainable, high-performance backend applications using Java and Spring
Design and maintain REST APIs and internal and third-party integrations
Build and evolve microservices and distributed backend systems
Design database structures and optimize queries
Troubleshoot production problems and drive root-cause analysis through permanent resolution
Identify performance bottlenecks and implement solutions
Write automated tests
Collaborate with product, business, engineering, and technical leadership
Clarify business problems and recommend technical solutions
Communicate architecture decisions, technical constraints, risks, and tradeoffs
Build stakeholder trust through ownership and engineering judgment
Use AI-assisted development tools for implementation, analysis, debugging, testing, and refactoring
Validate AI-generated code and identify productivity opportunities while maintaining quality

Requirements

What you’ll need

7+ years of professional software engineering experience with substantial hands-on backend development experience
Advanced Java knowledge, including core Java, object-oriented programming, concurrency, collections, exception handling, and application performance
Strong hands-on experience with Spring / Spring Boot
Experience designing and building microservices and distributed backend systems
Strong experience designing and maintaining REST APIs and third-party integrations
Strong relational database knowledge, including schema design, SQL, query optimization, and performance considerations
Experience with ORM technologies such as JPA/Hibernate or equivalent
Experience with Git and modern software development practices
Experience with automated testing and code-quality practices
Strong hands-on experience with AI code assistants such as Claude Code and Codex
Experience working in Agile development environments
Practical cloud experience, preferably AWS
Strong debugging, troubleshooting, production-support, and root-cause-analysis capabilities
Experience owning a complex project, system, or major feature from definition through delivery
Experience making or driving significant technical or architectural decisions
Experience improving another engineer's technical capability through mentorship or feedback
Experience handling ambiguous requirements and independently determining how to move forward
Experience working directly with business or product stakeholders to shape a technical solution
Preferred: experience with high-volume transactional systems, event-driven architecture, Kafka, asynchronous processing, high-volume data pipelines, e-commerce, order management, inventory, logistics, payments, shipping integrations, SOAP, GraphQL, gRPC, SAP Commerce (Hybris), web and mobile ecosystems, high availability, resilience, scalability, observability, monitoring, and production performance analysis
