About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead piping design activities and ensure compliance with codes, standards, project requirements, and specifications
  • Prepare 3D piping designs and equipment models
  • Prepare process piping designs for pharmaceutical facilities
  • Use PFDs, P&IDs, piping specifications, and standards for design
  • Lay out complex piping systems and process equipment in a 3D environment
  • Prepare isometric drawings with bills of materials
  • Coordinate with in-house resources and third-party 3D scanning firms; support point-cloud conversions for 3D model development
  • Coordinate design for the Project Manager throughout all design phases
  • Deliver conceptual design reviews and basic design reviews
  • Identify design risks, scope changes, and constructability concerns and provide actionable technical guidance
  • Mentor design teams and improve piping workflows, standards, and design quality
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary designs with discipline Leads
  • Own overall design delivery for large capital projects
  • Review construction progress in the field
  • Design, detail, assemble, and lay out piping systems, equipment, and pipe-support structural systems using 2D/3D design software
  • Guide other disciplines in client model reviews
  • Interface with clients, contractors, and coworkers
  • Interact with team members from all offices

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • High School diploma, two-year degree in mechanical discipline, or equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training
  • Strong piping, leadership, and time management skills
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively in a team environment
  • Minimum 15 years as a Piping Designer in an engineering design firm
  • Piping Leads require 5 years of Lead experience
  • Minimum 5 years on-site experience in a pharmaceutical facility is preferred, but similar facilities are acceptable
  • Experience utilizing laser scanning software to back model and account for field obstructions
  • Experience checking Piping Design work
  • Experience estimating piping design work
  • Experience with ASME B31.3 codes and requirements for pharmaceutical design
  • Working knowledge of pipe stress analysis concepts and experience coordinating with stress engineers
  • Experience with pipe support design
  • Experience working in a brownfield facility
  • Technical skills in Autodesk Plant 3D, SP3D or similar, Navisworks Manage, MS Office, MS Teams, Autodesk BIM/Forma, and Bluebeam Revu
  • Ability to learn and use other design software as required
  • Experience designing process support utilities in pharmaceutical and biotech industries is a plus
  • Experience with mega-projects or large capital projects is a plus
  • Ability to meet deadlines in high-pressure environments
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Climbing, walking, and ability to work and remain on feet for extended periods is required
  • Travel to client sites is required
  • Post-secondary education from a recognized technical college as an Engineering Technologist or equivalent experience required
  • Minimum 15 years of experience for Leads with 5 years of on-site field experience in pharma or related field
  • Minimum 5 years for supporting piping designers with 2 years of relevant field experience
  • Overtime may be necessary as workload dictates
