About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design and deliver high-quality evaluation projects for public and private sector clients
  • Support organisations including the Department for Transport and National Highways to reduce transport carbon emissions, improve road safety and support adoption of new technologies
  • Understand what works, why it works and for whom
  • Develop robust insight and evidence on the impacts of transport on people and society
  • Lead and support mixed-methods evaluation projects
  • Advise clients on proportionate and robust methodological approaches
  • Manage evaluation tasks, budgets, timelines, risks and project teams
  • Work with clients and stakeholders to shape evaluation questions and communicate findings
  • Produce evaluation reports, technical notes, briefing papers and presentations
  • Contribute to proposals, bids and business development activity
  • Collaborate with social research, behavioural science, evaluation and multidisciplinary specialists
  • Help grow AtkinsRéalis’ research and evaluation offer
  • Shape how clients use evidence, data and insight to improve outcomes
  • Develop technical, commercial and leadership skills

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Experience designing and delivering evaluations of policies, programmes or projects, ideally in transport, infrastructure, public policy, local government, social value, regeneration or related sectors
  • Experience developing theories of change, evaluation frameworks, benefits realisation plans or monitoring and evaluation strategies
  • Experience applying UK Government guidance such as the Magenta Book, Green Book, Transport Analysis Guidance or other relevant evaluation and appraisal frameworks
  • Strong project management skills, including managing tasks, budgets, timelines, risks and project teams
  • Experience working with clients and stakeholders to understand needs, shape evaluation questions and communicate findings clearly
  • Experience producing high-quality written outputs, including evaluation reports, technical notes, briefing papers and presentations
  • Ability to translate complex evidence into clear, actionable recommendations for clients and senior stakeholders
  • Clear understanding of how evaluation evidence supports policy development, investment and delivery decisions
  • Experience leading and contributing to proposals, bids or business development activity
  • Strong communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to quality, inclusion, ethical research practice and continuous improvement
  • Postgraduate qualification or demonstrable professional development in evaluation, social research, economics, data analysis or a related discipline (desirable)
  • Strong quantitative and/or qualitative analytical skills (desirable)
  • Knowledge of evaluation theory and practice, including theory-based evaluation, process evaluation, impact evaluation, mixed-methods approaches, quasi-experimental approaches, realist evaluation, contribution analysis or value-for-money evaluation (desirable)
  • Experience with data visualisation or analysis tools such as Power BI, R, Python, SPSS, Stata or similar (desirable)
  • Interest in digital tools and AI-enabled tools for evaluation and benefits management (desirable)
  • Security clearance may be required; relevant clearance must be obtained if necessary
  • Security vetting may require proof of UK residency for 5 years or longer
