About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Design high-level system architectures for instruments, including analog and RF front ends, signal conditioning and amplification, DAC and ADC selection, power and clocking schemes, and control and monitoring circuitry
  • Lead research, simulation, prototyping, evaluation, and design of high-speed mixed-signal front ends for quantum-computer lasers and actuators
  • Collaborate with quantum engineers and other groups to understand system needs and define hardware requirements
  • Perform board-level circuit design, schematic capture, and PCB layout in Altium Designer with a PCB layout designer
  • Participate in bring-up, verification, and testing of control-system hardware
  • Collaborate with FPGA, firmware, and software engineers
  • Drive hardware strategy across multiple concurrent projects while remaining engaged in hands-on engineering work
  • Report to the Control Systems Manager

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field
  • 5+ years of relevant postgraduate professional experience in board-level analog and digital circuit design, preferably with Altium Designer
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-growing startup environment
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with experimental physicists, hardware, and software engineers
  • Experience across the full design cycle, from concept and schematic capture through layout, fabrication, and initial board bring-up
  • Working knowledge of PCB design best practices and attention to detail
  • Mixed-signal design experience
  • Proficiency with electronic test equipment, including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, and signal generators
  • Experience working on boards with FPGAs, processors, multiple power supplies, high-speed buses, and high-speed memory interfaces
  • Familiarity with RF design concepts and/or software-defined radio
  • Experience designing and characterizing high-speed data-converter systems
  • Experience with multi-gigabit serial transceiver lane design, evaluation, and equalization
  • Experience with IBIS-AMI modeling and correlation for multi-gigabit serial interfaces
  • Experience designing high-speed memory interfaces
  • Experience with high-speed digital and analog I/O and connector/cable selection and characterization
  • Capability in scripting languages such as Python for data acquisition, instrument control, and hardware test automation
  • Experience working in a Linux environment
  • Familiarity with MicroTCA, PXIe, or similar pluggable instrument standards
