About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead and enhance Auckland Council’s Environmental Services UAV programme, including delegated Senior Remote Pilot responsibilities
  • Deliver expert GIS, spatial analysis and environmental information management advice across environmental initiatives
  • Undertake and support UAV-based ecological surveys, mapping and environmental monitoring
  • Mentor and support UAV pilots and contribute to departmental capability development and best-practice operations
  • Identify and implement innovative digital, imagery and data solutions to improve environmental outcomes and organisational capability
  • Support biodiversity protection, ecological monitoring and environmental decision-making across Tāmaki Makaurau
  • Contribute to the Enabling Tools programme and identify opportunities for emerging technologies, automation and digital solutions
  • Provide technical leadership and specialist advice to technical and non-technical audiences

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree in an environmental discipline, natural sciences or computer science
  • 7+ years’ relevant professional experience
  • Strong knowledge of natural sciences, ideally New Zealand ecology
  • Experience working with environmental information
  • Proven experience developing and implementing information, database, geospatial or data-support solutions
  • Advanced capability in ESRI ArcGIS/spatial mapping and/or database design and management
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills
  • Experience using relevant ecological analysis software
  • Full NZ driver’s licence
  • Communication, initiative, relationship-building and resilience to operate confidently in a complex, collaborative environment
  • Experience operating UAVs to best-practice standards and certification to 102 preferred
  • Experience with IoT and image processing preferred
  • Appreciation of Te Ao Māori and tikanga
  • Willingness to continue developing confidence and capability in te reo Māori and Treaty responsiveness
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug and alcohol testing
  • Successful qualification and other relevant pre-employment checks
