About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Deliver rigorous quantitative analysis of GB power, storage and flexibility markets, producing long-term forecasts for BESS revenues
- Build specialist knowledge of batteries and flexible assets, including revenue stacking across wholesale, the Balancing Mechanism, ancillary services, and the Capacity Market
- Manage projects end to end by defining analytical approaches, identifying and solving problems, suggesting next steps, and planning two to six months ahead
- Manage and coach one to three junior colleagues and lead interviews for more junior roles
- Lead client workshops and present content in client meetings with clear storylines and slides communicating implications
- Build relationships with client counterparts such as analysts, project managers, and optimisers
- Identify and deliver research process improvements, including repeatable AI-enabled approaches
- Optimise team workflows through adoption and use of AI
- Contribute to development of Aurora research products such as Flex, working with modelling and software teams to translate analytical priorities into client-facing tools
Requirements
What you’ll need- 3-5 years of experience at a BESS optimiser, trader or route-to-market provider, or at a storage developer, IPP or major consultancy, energy company, financial services company, or other knowledge-focused firm or institution, including exposure to battery storage or flexibility
- First-class or high second-class university degree, ideally in a quantitative or technical discipline (e.g. engineering, economics, mathematics, physics)
- Awareness of the commercial questions a real BESS owner or optimiser faces, including duration and sizing, route-to-market and optimiser contract structures, cycling and degradation trade-offs, grid connection and availability
- Demonstrated success in taking responsibility for project and process management in team-oriented environments
- Proven ability to interpret and derive insight from complex quantitative data and information
- Ability to communicate clearly and co-operate effectively with technically and non-technically minded people, including in client meetings and workshops
- A practical, curious approach to using AI tools in day-to-day analytical work
- Self-starting, entrepreneurial mind-set, and genuine interest in the energy transition
- Desirable: practical understanding of flexible asset trading or optimisation, including bidding and dispatch logic, revenue stacking, and wholesale, balancing and ancillary markets
- Desirable: exposure to the investment case for storage, including revenue forecasting, underwriting, or tolling and floor structures
- Desirable: leadership, management or mentoring experience
- Desirable: advanced data analytics using Python, R, SQL, or advanced Excel
- Desirable: experience using AI tools to improve analytical work
- Desirable: strong academic record, such as a Master’s degree or PhD
