About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead a new cross-office squad with experienced engineers based in Oxford and São Paulo.
  • Define ways of working, participate in selecting the initial team members, and contribute code from day one.
  • Write and review production code alongside the squad.
  • Co-design module boundaries and reusable interfaces with a senior technical authority.
  • Deliver new features and progressively migrate a Python codebase using GAMS and MOSEK to a modern architecture.
  • Design generic features for multiple regions.
  • Use AI tools to write, review, test, and analyze code, as well as help build agent workflows and tools.
  • Build the São Paulo team, define candidate profiles, and interview applicants.
  • Directly manage the São Paulo engineers, conducting 1:1s, performance reviews, and development feedback sessions.
  • Drive the squad’s delivery through sprints, daily stand-ups, retrospectives, and blocker removal.
  • Integrate Oxford and São Paulo as a single squad, distributing work by module and area of expertise.
  • Make the most of the daily overlap between Oxford and São Paulo and document decisions in writing.
  • Work with other squad leads and escalate cross-cutting architecture decisions to the senior technical authority.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, writing production code.
  • Proven technical leadership within a team: you have led technical work and made design decisions.
  • Strong Python skills (the codebase’s primary language).
  • Solid software engineering fundamentals: clean modular design, reusable interfaces, and good judgment when incrementally decomposing a complex codebase.
  • Hands-on experience with Agile / Continuous Delivery, ideally having helped improve a team’s delivery maturity.
  • Clear and direct communication: comfortable raising issues early, giving honest feedback, and working across teams and offices.
  • Hands-on experience with AI-assisted engineering and a perspective on where it genuinely adds value.
  • Professional fluency in English and Portuguese. English is the primary working language across both offices.
  • Availability to work in a hybrid model, three days per week from our São Paulo office (Paraíso area, Brigadeiro station).
