Advance engineering practices, shape technical direction, and drive scalable, high-quality software delivery across multiple teams
Collaborate with peers, architects, and engineering leadership on architectural direction and technical strategy
Advise engineering teams on trade-offs, complex technical challenges, and best practices across design, development, testing, and deployment
Contribute hands-on development to critical codebases
Facilitate technical discussions and design reviews
Mentor engineers at all levels and foster technical excellence and continuous learning
Occasionally lead projects, coordinate cross-team efforts, align timelines, and deliver high-impact initiatives
Partner with product and design stakeholders on technical feasibility, scalability, and business needs
Improve engineering processes, tooling, standards, productivity, code quality, and system reliability
Champion innovation, knowledge sharing, and a growth mindset across Avalon’s engineering culture

Requirements

What you’ll need

Bachelor’s Degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or related discipline; or equivalent years of relevant business and technical experience
8+ years of technical experience
Expert-level proficiency in one or more programming languages, such as Java, Go, or TypeScript
Deep understanding of relational and non-relational databases, data modeling, query optimization, and performance-focused data access design
Working knowledge of HL7 FHIR
Experience leveraging agentic AI across the SDLC
Advanced experience with Git and source control
Experience configuring and optimizing development environments and tools
Extensive experience designing and integrating web services and APIs, including RESTful and event-driven architectures
Proficiency in Linux environments
Strong background in Agile methodologies and the SDLC
Hands-on experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or GitLab CI
Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies, such as Docker and Kubernetes
Expertise in secure coding, performance tuning, and resilient, fault-tolerant systems
Proven ability to mentor engineers
Experience influencing architectural decisions
Proficiency in application design and system architecture
Exceptional communication and collaboration abilities
High autonomy, proactive approach, analytical and systems-thinking capabilities, ownership, and accountability
Preferred: production-grade HL7 FHIR applications, cloud-native applications on AWS/Azure/GCP, React or Next.js, testing frameworks, HIPAA/PHI/IIHI, and architecture diagrams
