About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Conduct research on existing and emerging ESG risks and opportunities to support NEI’s strategic stewardship work
- Monitor news daily, assess headline risk for companies in assigned sectors, and track sector-specific developments
- Identify material ESG risks and solutions for portfolio companies
- Participate in the engagement program by conducting company research, preparing briefing notes, organizing meetings, participating in company dialogues, taking meeting notes, and contributing to engagement-impact measurement
- Represent NEI in external collaborations and working groups, developing relationships with peers and subject matter experts
- Support the policy program by tracking policy developments, identifying submission opportunities, and providing research for policy positions
- Support the proxy voting program by monitoring upcoming Annual Shareholder Meetings, providing input on shareholder resolutions, and, depending on experience, executing timely votes according to voting guidelines
- Conduct ESG evaluations to determine eligibility and monitor ongoing controversies for publicly traded portfolio companies
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field of study
- Minimum three years’ experience in a research function in business, government, academic or nongovernmental organizations
- Superior data management and analytical skills
- Excellent research and investigation skills
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Strong affinity for collaboration
- Deep understanding of ESG factors and their influence on company risk
- Understanding of how to integrate multiple data sources into a proprietary ESG evaluation framework
- Ability to turn data into meaningful ESG insights
- Experience as an asset manager and familiarity with the needs of investment advisors an asset
- Experience with oil and gas, transportation and/or industrials sectors an asset
- Experience with ESG, impact, proxy voting and/or shareholder advocacy an asset
- Fluent communication skills in English are required
- Bilingual skills in French are an asset
