About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Build and evolve services across Babbel Labs' learning platform
  • Own services from API contract through production operation
  • Take on and maintain services written by other engineers
  • Design durable API and data contracts
  • Implement type-safe transforms between API, domain, and persistence layers
  • Instrument services and understand failure modes
  • Safely change live data and investigate production incidents
  • Deliver software using coding agents and verify their output
  • Design, build, ship, and operate serverless-first services in TypeScript and Node on AWS

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Strong, hands-on backend engineering in TypeScript and Node as the primary working language
  • Deep, practical AWS experience in a serverless-first setting
  • Experience designing with Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, and event streaming
  • Ability to design API and data contracts and model a domain
  • Experience with type-safe transforms between API, domain, and persistence boundaries
  • Production ownership of services, including instrumentation, failure-mode analysis, safe live-data changes, and incident response
  • Daily use of AI coding agents with verification of their output
  • Self-sufficiency in unfamiliar codebases
  • Working familiarity with infrastructure as code, especially Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Python as a secondary language is welcome
  • Go or Rust for performance-critical components is optional
  • Experience with a monorepo build system and shared tooling is nice to have
  • Public technical work, such as open-source contributions or writing, is nice to have
