About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide strategic state and local tax consulting and compliance services to middle-market and Fortune 500 clients
  • Build, review, and analyze state income tax compliance workpapers, including apportionment calculations, state-specific modifications, pass-through entity tax calculations, and planning considerations
  • Perform initial quality reviews of state income and franchise tax returns and related workpapers
  • Research state tax issues, including nexus, apportionment, taxability, filing requirements, and potential liabilities
  • Counsel clients on state and local tax controversies, including research, client correspondence, ruling requests, and audit defense guidance
  • Plan and execute tax projects, including due diligence and voluntary disclosure projects
  • Prepare technical memoranda on state and local tax issues
  • Communicate with clients, recommend business and process improvements, manage expectations, and identify opportunities to enhance client value
  • Assist with engagement staffing, scheduling, billings, collections, profitability targets, and deadlines
  • Review associates’ work, provide technical feedback, and coach team members
  • Build internal and external relationships with clients and the community
  • Participate in firm-wide learning and development programs

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 4-year degree
  • 3 years professional experience
  • CPA, Law License/JD, or CMI license eligible
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field required
  • Three (3)+ years’ experience in state and local tax preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of multistate income and franchise tax concepts, including nexus, state modifications, apportionment, and sourcing methodologies
  • Experience reviewing associates’ and/or senior associates’ work and providing coaching and technical guidance
  • Experience with CCH Axcess Tax and Thomson Reuters GoSystem Tax RS is a plus
  • Ability to lead and supervise others, provide exceptional client service, and manage multiple engagements and deadlines
  • Commitment to continuous learning
  • Strong attention to detail, ethical knowledge and commitment, sense of urgency, and commitment to quality and timely project completion
  • Eligibility to work in the U.S. without sponsorship highly preferred
