About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Advise high-net-worth individuals on state residency and domicile matters, including evaluating residency changes and developing residency strategies
  • Advise clients on tax implications and documentation requirements for establishing or terminating residency
  • Lead state residency and individual income tax audits and controversies
  • Respond to information document requests and develop factual and technical positions
  • Prepare correspondence and protests, interact and negotiate with state taxing authorities, and assist with administrative appeals
  • Advise on multistate individual income tax matters, income sourcing, compensation, liquidity events, business transactions, asset sales, and tax credits
  • Serve as a SALT resource to the Private Wealth practice and coordinate with federal, estate and gift, trust, business tax, and other specialists
  • Research complex state tax issues and monitor legislative and regulatory developments
  • Contribute to technical memoranda, client communications, articles, presentations, webinars, and thought leadership
  • Support business development through opportunities, client and referral relationships, proposals, presentations, and prospective opportunities
  • Maintain client communication, manage expectations, and provide responsive client service
  • Manage consulting and controversy engagements, including scope, staffing, scheduling, budgets, billings, collections, deadlines, and engagement economics
  • Review and coach associates and support their professional development

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 4-year degree
  • 3 years of professional experience
  • License eligible for CPA, CMI, Law License/JD
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field required
  • Three (3)+ years of experience in state and local tax, individual taxation, tax controversy, or a related area
  • Experience advising high-net-worth individuals, business owners, executives, family offices, or similar private clients strongly preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of state individual income tax principles, particularly residency and domicile, statutory residency, income sourcing, and credits for taxes paid to other states
  • Experience with state tax audits and controversy matters, particularly residency or individual income tax examinations, strongly preferred
  • Strong analytical, research, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate across State & Local Tax, Private Wealth, and other specialty tax and advisory practices while leading teams and managing multiple engagements, priorities, and deadlines
  • Experience reviewing associates’ work and providing coaching and technical guidance
  • Eligibility to work in the U.S., without sponsorship, required
  • Must be located in California near a Baker Tilly office
