About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Manage all aspects of Balt’s global intellectual property function
  • Provide legal advice and counseling on patents, trademarks, and trade secrets
  • Manage IP disputes, non-IP litigation, IP transactions, and IP due diligence
  • Advise business and R&D executives and present actionable legal guidance to leaders
  • Execute and lead global IP strategy and advise R&D, engineering, and operations
  • Manage outside counsel, budgets, and strategic global patent and trademark portfolios
  • Conduct patentability and freedom-to-operate assessments
  • Manage the company’s trade secrets program
  • Negotiate and draft patent and technology licenses, joint development agreements, research collaboration agreements, university licenses, and other IP agreements
  • Support corporate development activities involving IP due diligence and licensing
  • Monitor industry and technology areas through competitive surveillance
  • Provide intellectual property training to employees

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school and 10+ years of experience, preferably 5+ years in an in-house setting
  • Registered Patent Attorney
  • Current member in good standing of a state bar, preferably California and/or Massachusetts
  • BS/MS/PhD in engineering or another technical degree relevant to the medical device industry required
  • Experience with patent prosecution, technology transactions, and IP litigation
  • Strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively across organizational functions
  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple tasks and respond effectively to changing priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to travel domestically within the US and internationally, primarily to France, up to 20% of the time
  • Skills in intellectual property strategy, patent portfolio management, freedom-to-operate analysis, medical device industry IP, patent prosecution, IP litigation and dispute management, technology transactions, trade secret protection, M&A and IP due diligence, competitive IP intelligence, cross-functional business partnership, executive communication, outside counsel management, risk assessment, project and priority management, IP training, and global collaboration
