About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide legal support for residential mortgage origination activities, including conventional conforming, government-insured and guaranteed, jumbo, high net worth, and customized mortgage lending products
- Serve as a trusted legal advisor to business, operations, compliance, risk, and product partners
- Provide legal advice and strategic guidance on residential mortgage origination activities, products, processes, and initiatives
- Counsel business partners on customized mortgage lending programs
- Provide legal analysis on mortgage product development, underwriting practices, pricing, disclosures, advertising, digital applications, and secondary market eligibility requirements
- Partner with compliance, risk, audit, operations, and product teams to assess and mitigate legal and regulatory risk
- Support examinations, regulatory inquiries, audits, investigations, litigation, and remediation initiatives
- Participate in strategic projects involving technology modernization, digital mortgage initiatives, automation, artificial intelligence, and operational process enhancements
Requirements
What you’ll need- Active membership in at least one state bar
- A minimum of 6 years of experience practicing law, with substantial experience supporting residential mortgage lending activities
- Demonstrated experience advising on mortgage origination products and processes
- Strong understanding of mortgage industry business practices and operational workflows
- Doctorate degree in related field
- Desired: Experience supporting a large bank, mortgage lender, or other financial institution
- Desired: Strong knowledge of conventional conforming mortgage programs and agency requirements
- Desired: Experience advising on jumbo, private banking, high net worth, wealth management affiliated, or customized mortgage origination programs
- Desired: Familiarity with mortgage secondary market requirements and investor guidelines
- Desired: Experience interacting with federal and state regulatory agencies and examination teams
- Desired: Experience providing legal support for digital mortgage platforms, automated underwriting systems, eClosing initiatives, and product innovation efforts
