About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Provide subject matter expertise and decision-support in planning and delivering orphan reclamation programs
  • Guide budgets, schedules, and technical components of closure activities while identifying continuous improvement and cost-efficiency opportunities
  • Collaborate with project managers and coordinators on large-scale closure and reclamation programs
  • Set evaluation criteria and ensure contractors meet professional standards
  • Supervise external contractors and summer students
  • Recommend and implement processes and procedures for reclamation practices at orphan sites
  • Analyze orphan site conditions and develop recommendations for field- and office-based reviews and assessments
  • Maintain relationships with government agencies, non-profit research organizations, First Nations communities, and other partners
  • Monitor current research, ecological restoration practices, and relevant technologies, including pilot programs
  • Review orphan-site inventory to identify scope-of-work requirements
  • Analyze seed, planting feedstock, and project resourcing needs
  • Use environmental data, research, and monitoring to inform reclamation treatments
  • Respond to external inquiries from industry, professionals, First Nations, the public, government agencies, research organizations, and academia
  • Supervise Orphans & Restoration staff and support branch goals and outcomes
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a related field such as Engineering, Environmental Science, Biology, or Forestry, and at least five years of related experience
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered
  • Must be a qualified environmental professional, registered as a member in good standing with an organization operating under an act of the British Columbia legislature
  • Experience in evaluation, development, and technical execution of upstream oil and gas reclamation programs
  • Experience in stakeholder relations and building relationships
  • Experience with project management principles and tools
  • Experience leading or participating in facilitation and conflict resolution with affected stakeholders
  • Experience interpreting environmental regulations, legislation, and policy related to the energy sector and First Nations interests
  • Knowledge of current economic, socio-political, and public affairs issues facing the oil and gas industry
  • Experience developing procedural manuals and supporting documentation
  • Technical knowledge related to cumulative effects, restoration and reclamation of industrial disturbances, and First Nations environmental concerns in British Columbia is preferred
  • Experience with report writing and maintaining information databases
  • Experience using financial theory and principles for project budgeting and cost estimations
  • May be required to drive on low-grade roads and work in challenging field conditions, including isolated areas, carrying equipment, and walking long distances over uneven terrain
